A neti pot is a device used for nasal irrigation. Nasal irrigation can be helpful in alleviating some symptoms associated with allergies or colds, chronic sinus problems or sinus headaches. A neti pot looks remarkably like a small teapot.

There are several brands of neti pots available. Compare Prices

Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: 5-10 minutes

Here's How:

  1. The American Academy of Allergy Asthma and Immunology recommends the following recipe when mixing a solution for use in a neti pot:

    • 3 heaping teaspoons of iodine-free salt
    • 1 rounded teaspoon of baking soda

Seal this dry mixture in an air-tight container until ready for use.

  2. When you are ready to use your neti pot, mix one teaspoon of the dry mixture (above) with 8 ounces of distilled water (preferably lukewarm).

  3. Pour solution into the neti pot.

  4. Lean over a sink or the bathtub.

  5. Put the spout of the neti pot into one nostril while you lean over the sink. Tip the neti pot so that the solution flows into your nose. The solution will come out of the opposite nostril. Use about half of the solution.

  6. Repeat with the opposite nostril.
