Definition: An esophagogastroduodenoscopy,(EGD), is a procedure during which a small camera, (an endoscope,) in the form of a long tube is passed through the mouth and down into the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum, the first portion of the small intestine. Doctors use this procedure to view and diagnose disorders of these parts of the body.
The procedure is done on an outpatient basis. Sedative medication is given to make the procedure more comfortable. Before having an esophagogastroduodenoscopy, you will receive instructions not to eat for six to eight hours.
Also Known As: upper endoscopy
