Definition:
The larynx is also sometimes called the voice box, because it is the part of the throat where sound is generated. It consists of several pieces of cartilage that vibrate together to make noise. This is why when someone loses their voice, it is sometimes called laryngitis. The larynx can also protect the lungs because it is stimulated by partially digested food to pull upward and assist the epiglottis in covering the glottis.
