What Is Astelin Nasal Spray Used For:

Astelin nasal spray (azelastine hydrochloride) is an antihistamine used to treat rhinitis (runny nose) caused by seasonal allergies, allergies to dust, mold or dander and vasomotor rhinitis. Astelin is available by prescription in the United States.

Who Can Take Astelin Nasal Spray:

Astelin nasal spray can be taken by most healthy individuals over the age of five who have never had an allergic reaction to azelastine hydrochloride.

Astelin is a pregnancy category C and it is unknown if Astelin is secreted in breast milk. Therefore, you should talk to your doctor before using Astelin nasal spray if you are pregnant or nursing.

Astelin nasal spray can interact with other medications including cimetidine and ketoconozole, so you should discuss all medications you are taking with your doctor before starting Astelin.

Side Effects of Astelin Nasal Spray:

These are the most common side effects of using Astelin nasal spray:
  • a bitter taste
  • fatigue
  • headache
  • nasal burning
  • sore throat
  • dry mouth
  • sneezing
  • nausea
  • runny nose; blood nose
  • dizziness
  • weight gain

The following side effects constitute an emergency:

  • difficulty breathing
  • swelling of the face and tongue
  • wheezing (a distinct noise heard when breathing)

How Astelin Nasal Spray Is Taken:

The recommended dose for adults (people over the age of 12) is one or two sprays in each nostril two times daily. The pediatric dose for Astelin nasal spray is one spray in each nostril two times per day. Only your doctor can decide which dose is right for you, so read the instructions your pharmacist gives you carefully.

Other Things You Should Know About Astelin Nasal spray:

Astelin nasal spray is not intended to be taken by mouth. Keep the bottle out of reach of children. In case of accidental overdose, call your local poison control center or emergency medical service (911). Astelin nasal spray may cause rebound congestion.
