Vasomotor rhinitis causes chronic symptoms of runny nose, congestion and sometimes post nasal drip or sneezing in the absence of an active infection or allergic reaction. It is sometimes called non-allergic rhinitis. The cause of vasomotor rhinitis is poorly understood but in many individuals the symptoms are triggered or made worse by certain odors, hormonal changes, medications or even their emotional state. It can be difficult to diagnose and according to different research groups costs Americans a minimum of 1.8 billion dollars a year in treatment costs.
