Why Using Decongestants Can Make a Runny Nose Worse

Certain decongestants, especially those that are steroids, such as pseudo-ephedrine can actually make a runny nose worse. That's because when used for more than three days at a time these medications result in a phenomenon called rebound congestion. You may have heard of people becoming addicted to nasal sprays, this is in fact not addiction but a result of rebound congestion. To avoid this phenomenon avoid use of decongestants for more than three days at a time or talk to your doctor about alternative treatments. For more information including other medications associated with rebound congestion read: What is Rebound Congestion.
