Swallowing disorders are very common after having a stroke and occurs more than 50% of the time. This is because swallowing is a complex process and a stroke can damage the part of the brain which regulates this process. Researchers in Australia are using magnetic devices to stimulate the damaged areas of the brain, and restore swallowing. The research group has been awarded $300,000 by the National Health and Medical Research Council for the study.
Swallowing difficulty, also called dysphagia, can be caused by a number of things as a disruption in any one of the components of this complex process will result in swallowing issues. In addition to stroke a number of other neurological illnesses can cause dysphagia. It is not known if magnetic devices could also help with these conditions. For more information read:
