During the month of May, (Asthma Awareness Month), the American College of Asthma, Allergies and Immunology (ACAAI) is offering free asthma screenings. They'd also like you to know, that you may have asthma and not know it. Asthma and Allergies often go hand in hand and this spring has been a particularly hard year for allergies. Asthma is often triggered by pollen allergies, and emergency rooms often see an increase in asthma attacks after a thunderstorm, a phenomena that scientists suspect is caused by pollen. If you have asthma you should see an allergist to find out if you have seasonal or other allergies that may be triggering your asthma attacks. If you have allergies, you should be more aware of the signs and symptoms of asthma.
Although asthma is more common in children, adults can be newly diagnosed with asthma too. Subtle signs of the disease include: coughing, difficulty breathing while exercising, chest tightness, and wheezing. In addition to allergies common asthma triggers include: respiratory, viral, and sinus infections, exercise, cigarette smoke, acid reflux, anxiety and stress.
