Allegra is the newest antihistamine used to treat allergies that is available over-the-counter, its also the most expensive. So what makes Allegra worth the extra money when you can buy generic versions of antihistamines like Claritin (loratadine) and Benadryl (diphenhydramine) for so much less? What the manufacturer claims sets Allegra apart from these other antihistamines is that even though newer antihistamines like Claritin and Zyrtec aren't usually known to make people sleepy they do occasionally have this side effect while Allegra, (supposedly), does not. Like Benadryl, Allegra can be taken on an as needed basis but without completely knocking you out.
But whether or not you choose Allegra depends on your previous experience with antihistamines and what you are looking for in an antihistamine. If you've never used any of these medications before I wouldn't necessarily recommend trying Allegra right off the bat. You may get along just wonderfully with something like Claritin. However, if you've tried Claritin and Zyrtec and can't tolerate the side effects or didn't get adequate relief, Allegra might be a lifesaver for you, well worth every penny. Of course the decision on which antihistamine to use is best made as a partnership between you and your physician.
