Scientists have discovered a gene, microRNA - 138, that is largely responsible for the metastasis of oral cancer. The lower your levels of microRNA-138 are the more likely your cancer is to spread. It is not yet clear how this study can be applied to the treatment of oral cancer, but it may be the basis for medication research. Hypothetically medication could be designed at some future point to suppress this gene. According to the American Cancer Society cases of oral cancer have risen by 21 percent in the last five years, significantly more than other types of cancer. Oral cancer has been linked to alcohol and tobacco use and more recently to the virus HPV. This study was reported in the August 2010 issue of the International Journal of Cancer.
