A new study out of The University of Alabama Birmingham confirms that Viagra (sildenafil) use can cause sudden and long term hearing loss. Viagra is used to treat erectile dysfunction as well as other illnesses such as pulmonary hypertension. It works by inhibiting a substance called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE-5i). It is not entirely clear if other PDE-5i inhibitors such as Cialis and Levitra have the same effects on hearing. The FDA has already included hearing loss as a side effect of the medication on its label, the findings of this study confirm what was already suspected, Viagra can cause hearing loss and anyone using the medication should report any symptoms of hearing loss to their physician immediately.

According to an article appearing in Newswise about the study men using Viagra were more than two times as likely to develop hearing loss than those not using the drug. It is not entirely clear why Viagra causes hearing loss but according to the article study author Gerald McGwin, Ph.D believes it may be caused by an increased amount of blood flow to the tissue of the ear.
